Burial gifts found in Islamic era graves in Savadkuh

TEHRAN, Sept. 3 (MNA) -- A team of archaeologists currently working at the historical site of Lafor in Savadkuh of Mazandaran Province, discovered a cemetery named Aheh, dating back to the early Islamic era, head of the team announced on Saturday.

Mehdi Abedini said that several gifts or personal belongings were found inside the graves near the buried ones.

The interesting point is that the bodies belong to the 3rd or 4th century of Hijra and were buried with several gifts, though burying gifts were against Islamic beliefs.

“The corpses were aligned toward south and the gifts are rings and decorative beads made of glass,” he noted.

According to Abedini, this burial tradition was probably performed before the advent of Islam and was practiced in the early Islamic era as well.

“The graves indicate the intermediary era before Islam to the Islamic era. According to the historical documents, regional people of Lafor converted to Islam after years of war and fighting. The graves show that the inhabitants were the newly converted Muslims who practiced some of their customs for several years,” he noted.

Excavations at the site must be carried out at a hurried pace because the cemetery and village of Laforak, as well as eleven other villages, will be devoured by the reservoir of the Alborz Dam when water-filling of the dam takes place next year.
